Backyard Fireworks....

Nick and I were invited to a friend's house this year to watch his kids shoot off fireworks. What fun! It has been years since I've sat in the driveway and shot off fireworks, because as a kid they were routinely banned in Colorado due to dry weather. For those of you wondering how I shot the second photo: Use a tripod and put your camera on the shutter speed mode, BULB. With this setting, the shutter simply stays open for as long as the shutter release button remains depressed. So... have your subject light a sparker, face away from the camera (otherwise whatever you write will be reversed) and spell out something. We found cursive was the best for words. As the photographer, hold down the release for the duration of the name. I felt like I was shooting a video and was staying quiet - but remember, you can talk to your subject! Tell them when to start and have them tell you when they are done. BULB is also the function necessary for shooting fireworks- as I did in the photos I took of the Hudson River fireworks (see below).  Let me know if you try this out for yourself! I'd love to hear about it!
