Siege of Vicksburg.....

While my father was visiting last weekend, we also traveled to the Vicksburg Military National Park. I have to admit that I'm not a huge history buff, but driving around the battlefields was really interesting. Below the picture of the cannon is a picture of the Illinois State Memorial from the outside, and then one from the inside look up to the top of the dome. The inside of the memorial has bronze tablets with the names of 36,000 Illinois soldiers who participated in the battle. This was one of many state memorials, but this one was especially neat.

As my father and I pulled up to the memorial a beautiful Buick was getting ready to pull away. The driver stopped and talked to us for a few moments when he saw our interest..... of the car-gawking variety. Apparently the car was out on a several-hundred-mile test drive. Later this year the owner is driving it across county, and wanted to make sure all the kinks were out before then. In a twist of irony, I had learned just the night before that one of my father's first jobs growing up in Michigan was at a Buick plant, where he worked to build cars almost exactly like the model in the picture.

Because Wikipedia knows all... here is the link for the Siege of Vicksburg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Vicksburg
